Howard J. Sniderman, KC

Partner, Co-Chair of Commercial Leasing Practice (Litigator)

Admitted to the Alberta bar in 1982, Howie attended the University of Calgary, University of Manitoba, and University of Alberta, where he earned his LL.B. in 1981. He is a senior litigator and past chair of the Witten LLP Litigation Department. Howie has a commercial litigation & arbitration practice that emphasizes commercial lease and contract litigation, builders’ liens, and insolvency litigation.

Howie was designated Queen’s Counsel (now King’s Counsel) in 2013. Most recently, Howie was the recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Service Award for Pro Bono Legal Service from the Law Society of Alberta and Canadian Bar Association (Alberta Branch).

Howie taught Civil Advocacy at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law and is a frequent lecturer and seminar panelist on topics ranging from trial advocacy to commercial lease matters for numerous legal and industry associations.

He has served as chair of the Canadian Bar Association Commercial Leasing subsection and as president of Edmonton Beth Shalom Congregation, chair of Camp BB-Riback, and on the national board of Maccabi Canada. Howie is an Associate Member of the Board of Governors of Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a member of the Executive Committee of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

Howie coached minor hockey and baseball. He made his professional pitching debut by throwing out the honourary first pitch at an Edmonton Capitals baseball game, but much to his consternation, has not yet been asked to sign a major league contract.
